postheadericon Mens Winter Jackets; the Style for You

Oh the weather outside is frightful… no, literally, it’s awful, and this being the UK it’s only gonna get worse. Wind, rain, Jack Frost nibbling at your nuts and even from time to time, half an inch of snow that will invariably shut every road, airport and train station in the country. And with this harsher weather comes an even bigger problem, which winter jacket will keep your look sharp while still managing to battle the elements.

Choosing the right mens jacket is minefield, one which many men fail to negotiate. I’ve seen men wearing parkas over their suits, technical sports jackets with chinos and even formal overcoats with ripped jeans. So, to save us all form these abominations this year, below is a guide to the key mens jackets for whatever look you’re rocking this winter.

Formal – three quarter length jackets are big this season and lend themselves perfectly to formal wear. Look for natural fabrics with clean lines and limited detailing. Tailored belted trenches, single breasted macs or overcoats and heavy pea coats all in wool or heavy cottons are great choices. Brands such as French Connection, Hilfiger and Robbie Williams’ new Farrell range all invest heavily in these wool three quarters this season.

Casual – parkas make an appearance again this season and the key addition is the fur trim hood. This mod inspired classic looks great with jeans and trainers and is given an update by some of the biggest high street brands with Ted Baker and G-Star offering some fine examples. If you’re after something a little shorter, Harrington jackets and leather bombers are great go to jackets that will transcend trends and remain fashionable year after year.

Smart Casual – avoid extremes in length here and look for a jacket that sits below the belt line at about mid buttock. Barbour style and quilted jackets look great worn with chinos and brogues and deliver the country gent look. Alongside Barbour, Gant, Firetrap and Scotch & Soda all offer great options. Heavy wool Reefer jackets with large buttons and military styling are also perfect for the look and with High Street stores offering own brand versions price shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

So there you go fellas, no excuses, you need to be putting as much thought into your winter jacket as you do the rest of your outfit.
